The Odeon was opened in Ottawa’s city centre on May 20, 1949 with Moira Shearer in “The Red Shoes”. It was one of nineteen Odeon theatres designed by architect Jay I. English for the Odeon Canada chain, a subsidiary of the British based Rank Organisation.
Jay English had died prior to completion, and the plans were revised by British architect Leslie H. Kemp.
The Odeon was closed by a natural gas explosion in an adjacent building on October 25, 1958. It was converted into retail use and was demolished in 1999 or 2000.

Closed 25 October 1958 due to a natural gas explosion at an adjacent building. The collapsed roof and back wall was repaired and the ground floor of the building continued to be used for retail until finally being torn down in the late 90’s or early 00’s. Located at 142 Bank St.
The auditorium of the Odeon Ottawa was on the cover of Boxoffice, December 2, 1950.
