Located just behind the Brussels Opera House, the so called Theatre de la Monnaie, in the Rue L'Atildeopold opened on 3rd February 1921. It was first called Monnaie Cinema and was equipped with a Wurlitzer theatre organ around 1928. It changed name in 1938 and became Studio de l'etoile to refer the Paris cinema of the same name. In 1940 it became a music hall and was renamed Olympia. After World War II in 1946, it became the Monnaie Cinema again.
In May 1953 it was renamed L'Ecuyer Cinema because its second entrance in the street Rue l'Atildeopold was closed. In 1962 the last film shown was Walt Disney’s feature length animation “101 Dalmatians”.
It was put in mothballs for years until the direction of Theatre de la Monnaie took it over to make a second theatre. In 1969 the musical “Man of La Mancha with Jacques Brel was performed there. Since then, it was again closed. Now with the auditorium demolished, the entire block is now in renovation, with only the former Rue L'Ecuyer entrance remaining. The word ‘Monnaie’ is engraved in stone and has been renovated and retained.
