Opened on November 28, 1979, the Gould Cinemas was a first-run movie theater, a second-run theater, a last-run theater, a babysitter, your shoes' worst nightmare, a playground, the world’s cheapest date, and a place to waste away a Saturday. You were there.
Most didn’t check the schedule…they’d just pop in and catch the middle of the movie, maybe stick around to see the beginning at the next showing.
Worst location anywhere…at the rear of the Gould Shopping Center (Capitol Expressway/McLaughlin/Tuers). To drum up business, the owners installed disco lights. Unbelievable. It was closed on May 25, 1995.

I remember 1985 being the year that I most visited this theater seeing film “greats” such as D.A.R.Y.L., Better Off Dead, Rambo II, Commando, Rocky IV, Legend, Teen Wolf, The Breakfast Club, and who could forget the excellence that was Transylvania 6-5000!
Used to run Filipino movies daily
I drove past here the other day for a photo and found that the section that housed the theatre has been torn down.
Used to visit Gould Cinemas a lot in the 80s. Lots of bad movies and sticky floors are what I remember, but I’m sure we caught a few good films. I mostly went with my late father, so I still have a fondness for this place. Recently our shop designed a t-shirt just to pay homage: https://royalewithtees.net/products/gould-cinemas-san-jose-vintage-t-shirt
