The Ritz Cinema opened in 1954. It is listed in 1980 with a seating capacity of 700, and had a stage.
It was closed in 1992. Located adjacent to the Railway Hotel, in late-1995, the hotel applied for permission to demolish the Ritz Cinema, to enable an extension to the hotel to be built. However, this didn’t happen immediately and another proposal was planned for construction to begin in Spring/Summer of 2001.
Again, nothing has happened and the building sits vacant and unused in August 2008.

My photographs were taken in September 2008. The Ritz actually opened in 1954, although I gather it failed to live up to the standards of comfort and heating set by the 1936 Regal! The Ritz was purchased in 1961 by J. J. McManus, a local entrepreneur, who continued showing films until 1992, its closure presumably a consequence of the opening of the Castle Entertainment Centre (in the same way that the Ritz had ‘seen off’ the earlier Townhall Cinema!).
