Avenue Theatre

Built of the site of the Crown Theatre and located on Howard Avenue in downtown Biloxi. A first run house, the Avenue Theatre opened on February 3, 1949 with John Lund in “Miss Tatlock’s Millions”. It was closed on January 2, 1977. The Avenue Theatre, like the Don Theatre in Gulfport, had stadium type seating, with only a few rows up front of the stage with a sloped floor area. It was sold by its owner to Gulf States Theatres who closed it around the time they opened the Surf Side Twin Cinema.

The Avenue was orginally operated by the Meyer family, merchants in Biloxi, who also operated the Meyer and Harlem Theatres.

The Avenue was said to have closed January 2, 1977 due to code enforcement issues. The city essentially used eminent domain to condemn the property, order its demolition which was accompanied by a salvage sale. The property was used to make room for the Vieux Marché Mall / Shopping Center.
