The Broadway Cinema opened on 12th December 1936 with Richard Hayward in “The Early Bird”, and was operated by the Curran circuit. It was the largest of Belfast’s suburban cinemas, opening with a seating capacity of 1,500; 1,230 in the stalls and 270 in the circle. The facade was covered in cream faiance tiles.
It was sold to the Rank Organisation in 1955. On the night of 31st January 1972, the Broadway Cinema was set on fire by the IRA during one of their bombing campaigns. Although the damage could have been repaired, due to the ‘Troubles’ the owners thought not to carry them out, and the Broadway Cinema never re-opened.
