The Town Hall was built in 1862, designed by Newcastle architect John Johnstone, after plans by London based architect John Philpott Jones.
It was converted into an arts centre in September 1993. The main hall is known as the Eden Theatre, named after the now demolished theatre of the town. Films are screened once or twice a month, and tend to be recent releases. Plays, concerts and musical events also take place here.
