The Simons IMAX Theatre at the New England Aquarium was opened on December 6, 2001 as Boston’s first IMAX 3D theatre.
Designed by E. Verner Johnson and Associates, a Boston-based firm, the theatre boasts a screen which is 65' tall by 85' wide, making it the largest in New England.
The theatre features natural history IMAX films (2D and 3D) which enhance the New England Aquarium’s mandate during aquarium operating hours, and the best of Hollywood with IMAX DMR (2D and 3D) films in the evening. Thus the theatre embraces the best attributes of an institutional theatre by day, and a stand-alone commercial theatre by night. Revenues from all theatre operations are used to support the Aquarium’s mission to Present, Promote and Protect the World of Water. By August 2020 it was no longer an IMAX theatre.

This was Boston’s second IMAX screen. The first was the Museum of Science’s Mugar Omni Theater, which I just now added to this website.
Sorry Ron but the Aquarium Imax was Boston,s 1st IMAX 3D theatre. The Omni theatre is as stated Omnimax which is different and it does not show (3D).
No Hollywood films here lately perhaps due to the fact they still use film

Correct that the Museum of Science was an Omnimax house. It got to the point where I refused to review films playing there because they insisted on stretching Imax films into the Omnimax format. I recall watching a travelogue on the Grand Canyon and getting to the point where they showed a Native American crouching overlooking the rim, and I had to stare at his butt fifty feet wide.
