Final Marquee for Indiana Theater

The Indiana Opera House was opened on November 30, 1901. By 1911 it had been renamed Indiana Theatre. By 1943 the Indiana Theatre was operated by Paramount Pictures Inc. through their subsidiary John Balaban. It was still open in 1965. It was demolished in 1978.

Built circa 1922, remodeled and wired for sound 1929, remodeled again 1965, demolished 1978. Story of a pre-demolition sendoff here.

The Indiana was obviously much older than the 1920s. It appears on the 1901 Sanborn, with the note ‘From Plans’. At that point it was called the Indiana Opera House. By 1911, it is the Indiana Theatre, with a capacity of 1,300. By 1920, the original balcony, which was an angular C-shape which ran up to the stage, has been cut back, and given a concave curved front. Between 1920 and 1952, the appearance is unchanged.

The actual opening date is November 30, 1901.

The Indiana Theatre closed for the final time on June 15, 1978 with “Smokey And The Bandit”, and was last operated by Kerasotes. It was also once operated by V.I.P Theatres several years prior.
