Located in the centre of Copenhagen, adjacent to the main entrance of the world famous Tivoli Gardens, the Palladium Biograf was one of the main cinemas in the city.

Designed in a splendid Art Deco style by architect Ernst Kuhn, it opened on 18th January 1938 with a Deanna Durbin film, and the opening was attended by members of the Danish and Swedish Royal families. Seating was provided in the orchestra level, where there was a raised stepped section at the rear, and a balcony level. The Palladium Biograf was equipped with a Wurlitzer 3Manual/7Rank theatre organ which was opened by British born organist Barry Brettoner. It was later played by Mogens Kilde, Benna Moe and Peer Frost. This was the only Wurlitzer organ to be installed in Denmark and it was often played by guest organists such as Robin Richmond, H. Robinson Cleaver, Bobby Pagan and Ena Baga from the United Kingdom.

In later years, the Palladium Biograf was fitted out with 70mm presentation equipment. It was closed on 31st December 1976. The Confederation of Danish Indutries (Dansk Industriforening) owned the building and the plot of land and they demolished it in 1977.

A shopping centre and office block was built on the site, and the 3-screen Palladium Biograf now operating from the basement and re-named Metropol Biograf, has replaced the original Palladium Biograf.

Our father Barrie Brettoner was the inaugural organist, and I have several photos & fragile newsprint of our parent’s time in Copenhagen. Having married just before departing Australia for England (dad was born East Riding region Yorkshire UK); seeking fame and a furthering musical career, this was like an extended honeymoon for the young couple. They returned to England & finally returned home to Australia just after the outbreak of WW II.
