Functions: Movies (First Run)
Previous Names: Filmtheater Prager Strasse, Ufa-Palast, Cinemagnum Dresden
Originally a single screen cinema with 1,018 seats, it was built in 1970-1972 as the Filmtheater Prager Strasse. It opened on 7th October 1972. It was a totally round drum and was designed by Gerhard Langraf and Waltraut Heischkel, with interior designed by Theo Wagenfuhr. There was also a small screen located in the basement for screening repertory films.
Between 1996 and 1998 an extension was added by building a new 14-screen multiplex cinema by Viennese architectural firm Coop Himmelb. It re-opened as the 4,700 seat Ufa-Palast.
The original main auditorium of the Rundkino building was also used for youth theatre performances as well as films. Five screens were constructed in its basement in 1991, but these suffered from flooding in 2002 and the entire building was closed by Ufa and it was abandoned.
The main auditorium was converted into a sophisticated 3D cinema known as the Cinemagnum which opened with 900 seats in 2007. In 2016, the 900-seat auditorium is operated by the Cineplex-Germany chain, together with 6 of the other screens and operates as the Rundkino.
