Liberty Theatre Stage

This theatre, formerly on Pittsburgh’s South Side, was called the K & K Opera House from September 1908. In 1919 it was sold and renamed K & K Theatre. In March 1920 it became the Crystal Theatre.

In November 1922 it became one a few theatres in and around Pittsburgh called ‘Liberty’. This Liberty Theatre was still operating in July 1960.

By 1983 the site of this theatre was a surface parking lot.

It was operating as the Liberty in 1950, as a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article in July of that year noted a fire in the theater.

My Grandfather, Otto Belasco, was a projectionist here. He accompanied silent films with his piano playing. He was an accomplished musician.

My Grandfather, Louis Michaels, built and operated the Liberty Theater and the Rex Theater on South Side. For that time period, the Liberty Theater was a large entertainment center that included bowling lanes and a large pool room. There were midnight shows, famous live acts, and a great deal of community involvement.

My husband’s Grandfather, Gus “Constantine” Michaels was partners with his brother, Louis Michaels in the Liberty Theatre. I have been searching for information on this theatre for years. Does anyone know or have a picture of the Liberty around 1918 if so I would love to add it to our family tree.

The big ad in The Pittsburgh Press on Sunday, July 3, 1960 for a first-run double bill of “The Last Days of Pompeii” and “The Boy and the Pirates” lists all of the theaters showing it. One of them is the Liberty Theater – South Side, so yes, Ed Blank, this theater was operating in 1960.
