Owen Sound Little Theatre

Built in 1912 as the Grand Opera House, it was used for vaudeville. In the 1920’s, John Griffin bought the theatre and renamed it Griffin’s Theatre, operating as a movie theatre. It later became part of the Odeon chain, known as the Roxy Theatre and closed on October 25, 1986 with “The Coalminer’s Daughter”.

A local group bought the theatre in 1987, and after renovation uses it for live performances and community events.

In Google Street View (pan it a bit left) we can see that the name Roxy is still on the theater’s sign, with “Owen Sound Little Theatre” in much smaller letters below it. The name Roxy Theatre is even in the URL of the little theater company’s official web site, and is used in its advertising, so this house should probably still be listed as the Roxy Theatre.

This theater should be identified as the Roxy Theatre. It is owned and operated by the Owen Sound Little Theatre. They have a web site: roxytheatre.ca. There are photos of the Opera House (c. 1914) and the Roxy (c. 1985), and some information about the history of the building.
