Rivoli Cinema

A handsome cinema in Corporation Street, the Rivoli Cinema opened on 7th October 1929, operated by Eagle Picturedromes ((Wigan) Ltd. Seating was provided for 1,350-seats, with 1,000seats in the stalls and 350-seats in the circle. Within weeks of opening, it was equipped with a Christie 2Manual/7Rank theatre organ built by Hill, Norman & Beard and the console was on a lift. It was taken over by the J.F. Emery Circuit in 1932 and they operated in until 1933. By 1934 operated by County Playhouses (Wigan) Ltd. a subsidiary of Wigan based Eagle Picturedromes Ltd.

The organ survived in the building until CinemaScope was introduced in the mid-1950’s. The Rivoli Cinema was taken over by the Leeds based Star Cinemas chain in September 1965. They converted it into a Star Bingo Club. Later operating as EMI Bingo, followed by Coral Bingo and finally closing as a Gala Bingo Club in 1999. It was eventually demolished.
