The Yazoo Theatre was being operated by Dixie Theatres Corporation when Boxofficeof May 14, 1949 reported that the house had recently reopened following an extended closure to repair fire damage.
The theatre was rebuilt as the New Yazoo Theatre launching April 27, 1925 with Gloria Swanson in “Madame Sans Gene.” By the time it transitioned to sound, it was the Yazoo Theatre. Gulf States closed the Yazoo on May 3, 1979 with “The Evictors”. It was demolished in December of 1979.
The Yazoo is listed in the 1979 NRHP listing as 106 S Main, and a construction date of 1925 is given.
There’s another theater at 303 S Main. Just the shell remains, and the inside is some sort of park. Can’t put a name to it, but if anyone knows, we should add it.

I remember going up to this theatre from Jackson, MS with some executives from Gulf States Theatres in 1980 to close the theatre. The main problem was that roof was in terrible shape and the cost to repair was more than they thought the theatre was worth. You could actually see light coming in from the hole. There was a very nice lady that was the manager of the theatre then and had a lot of stories to tell.
