Opened in September 1932, the Playhouse Cinema was built for Scott’s Empire’s Ltd. a subsidiary company of Caledonian Associated Cinemas Ltd. Designed in an Art Deco style by architect Alister G. MacDonald, the elder son of former British Prime Minister, Ramsay MacDonald.
Seating was provided for 802 in stalls and circle levels. The auditorium was very wide and had a 42 feet wide proscenium, but a small stage, only 8 feet deep.
During its later years of operation it had gone over to cine-bingo use and the Playhouse Cinema closed on 10th September 1977 with James Brolin in "The Car". Today the front foyer section is in retail use by a health & beauty store named Semi-Chem. I believe the auditorium is unused.
On 29th March 1995, Historic Scotland designated the Playhouse a Grade C(s) Listed building.
