River Oaks 7-8

River Oaks 7-8 opened Friday October 21st, 1983 by Plitt Theaters as a supplement to the already existing screens 1-4, 2-3, and 5-6. The first movies to play on these screens were “Rumble Fish” and “The Dead Zone”.

What made these screens unique were the different touches in the auditoriums. Screen #7 was done in a typical Plitt fashion, red wall padding, speakers, etc., however, one side of the screen (maybe the left) had a slight wavy curve. But screen #8 was done with dark colored brick padding, speakers and a normal screen. And when you got to the enterance that lead to the theaters, they didn’t say 7-8. Instead, #7 was 1-3-5-7-9, and #8 was 2-4-6-8-10. They got rid of that neat little feature in the late 90’s, maybe early 2000.

Not long after Cineplex Odeon opened screens 1-6 in 1988, they re-numbered the theaters. 1-4 became 9-10, 5-6 became 11-12, but 7-8 keept their numbers. In October 2005, the 7-8 was closed, likely because of the Loews Cineplex-AMC merger.

Towards the end of it’s time, it always seemed to be cleaner than 9-10, which became plagued with sticky floors and the like. It was demolished in November 2012.

This is awesome, thanks for the list. Can anyone explain the difference between the theaters hidden on the west side of Torrence Ave., the one’s attached physically to the mall, parking lot building on south end and the n the River Run location?

I saw Faces Of Death @ a midnight show back in 1990?1991? Everyone who stayed till the end recieved a certificate at the nd from a nurse.
