Listed in the 1961 and 1962 Yellow Pages under “Art-Foreign and Classic Films” in Washington - Lee Shopping Center - Intersection Arlington Boulevard & Washington Boulevard".
The 1948 Times-Herald also lists the Byrd, 104 S. Wayne St tel - OX-1733 “Strawberry Roan” staring Gene Autry.
The theatre, shopping center and 100 block of South Wayne Street are all gone now. Located across Washington Boulevard (VA-27) at Arlington Boulevard (US-50)from Fort Myer.
The theatre went from a neighborhood house to an “art” house to an “X” house…

The Byrd was part of the “Neighborhood of Virginia” chain. It had the classic Neighborhood E-7 & Peerless magnarc booth.
I lived across from the Byrd Theater in the early 1970’s. By then, the “family” clientelle vanished when it became a haven for soft core porn. I remember that the big hit of its later years was a 3-D bomb “The Stewardesses.”
