Stocksbridge is located to the outer north-west fringe of the city of Sheffield. The Palace Cinema opened on 12th May 1921. Seating was provided for 700 in the stalls and 300 in the circle. There was a large stage, flanked by massive columns which was often put into use with variety acts to supplement the film programme.
It was taken over by the Star Cinemas circuit of Leeds in 1942 and they operated it until closure on 23rd July 1966. It was converted into a bingo hall. In recent years it has been in use as an indoor shopping market, but this has now ceased.
