Regal Cinema

The Regal Cinema opened 13th March 1937. Closed in August 1986 with “ET-The Extra Terrestrial” and became a bingo club. It reopened as a 4-screen cinema on 20th November 1992 and closed again in late-May 2001.

The building stood empty and unused until 4pm in the afternoon of 13th December 2008, when it was badly damaged by fire, which had been started deliberately. The auditorium was demolished, leaving only the facade and foyer standing.

I was in Larne last week and am sad to report the auditorium of the Regal cinema has been demolished. The frontage in still standing but for how long? Wouldn’t it be great if the auditorium was re-built and the still existing frontage refurbished and retained.

Does anyone know Pat Watson? She worked in the Regal the early sixties. I am looking for her. Many thanks, Monique Morshuis, The Netherlands:

The Regal opened on 13 March 1937 and was one of six cinemas designed in 1935 by John McBride Neill. An incendiary device damaged the balcony and roof in October 1977. It must have closed some time in the 1980s as it was reopened 20 November 1992 by Nevin Busby with 4 screens.

Yes, it originally closed as a cinema end of August 1986 with E.T. but remained open for bingo.
