Tower Theatre

On October 28, 1947, grand opening ceremonies were held for the snappy Tower Theatre. A romantic ambience permeated this ‘Tropical International’ styled cinema.

Interior colours were gay pastel shades. A petite concession stand stood at one end of the lobby, and hot dogs were not sold since the owner did not want mustard smudging expensive theatre chairs. It was closed in 1961.

In 1968 the Tower Theatre was used as a location in the 1969 movie “Midnight Cowboy” starring Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman, standing in for a movie theatre in New York. It has since been demolished.

It will take a little more research to find where it was located as the building does not appear to exist any more.

After the Tower closed, it was used in one scene in the movie Midnight Cowboy with Jon Voight. It was supposed to be a theater in New York City. That whole part of the street was torn down and is now a parking lot.

I believe the Texan drive Inn was also featured in Midnight Cowboy
