- Aug 2, 2010 — Beautiful cinema converted into a bookstore
Originally opened on 14th May 1919 as a live theatre, known as the Teatro Grand Splendid, it was built for empresario Max Glucksmann. It was converted into a cinema in 1926, and continued until closing on 4th December 2000. The ceiling has paintings by Italian artist Nazarino Orlandi.
Since 2009 it serves as ‘El Ateneo’ possibly the most luxurious of all the bookshops in the world! The architect for the conversion was Fernando Manzone, who retained as much as possible of the original decorative details. There is a cafe located on the former stage.
