When the Empire Cinema opened on 25th November 1912, it had a quainter name as "The Salford Electric Empire Theatre"
The cinema was designed by Northwest England’s prolific cinema architect John Knight.
In 1932, the cinema was put out of action for a few months by a fire which destroyed the screen, curtains, and speakers, and badly damaged the piano, the orchestra pit, and the organ. The cinema reopened in April of the same year. In April & May 1935 it was rebuilt to the plans of architectural firm Belshaw & Gomersall. It was closed on 9th August 1959 when Wilfred Hyde White starred in “Emergency Ward 10”.
In 1960, the cinema was purchased by the British Legion for use as a social club which it remained until its demolition in 1981.

Have just obtained an advertising flyer for this Theatre. On stage is Jascha Maccabi “World’s Famous Dramatic Tenor”. On screen is Pola Negri in “The Woman on Trial” and on Fridays “Joy” Night is Doreen and Wood, Comedy Act, from the Palladium London. Interestingly the film “The Woman on Trial” was released in 1927 so I can only date the flyer to then
