The Cromwell Picture House was built in 1919 but didn’t open until 26th September 1920. It was located on the corner of Cromwell Road and Gerald Road in the Charlestown area north of Salford.
“Talkies” were first shown in 1930 with the first film being "The Singing Fool", starring Al Jolson.
During World War II, the Cromwell Cinema was extremely popular with the American troops who were billeted at the nearby old Salford Racecourse.
Sadly, the Cromwell Cinema closed on 3rd October 1959. It was left shuttered for about three years until a "bulldozer happy" Salford Council purchased it for £5,000 and, in December 1962, they did what they do best and demolished it. An office building named Cromwell House was built on the site.

Cromwell Cinema Theatre Pendleton – My Grandfather (Leslie Millar) was the first Manager and managed it until about 1933. One interesting story is that a 16 year old girl applied to be the pianist for the silent films – her name was Violet Carson (of Coronation Street fame) – It was her first job! I have a painting showing the theatre building as it was in its heyday. It was a large theatre even by modern standards.
The 2 projectors from this cinema are in the loft of a house in Prestwhich 3 or 4 miles away. They have been there since the cinema colsed.
