Westchester Theatre (circa 1904)

The Westchester Theatre is listed as operating in the 1914-1915 edition of American Motion Picture Directory. In this edition the address is given as 2319 Winchester Avenue. But this could have been a typo, as to confuse matters further, the 1926 edition of Film Daily Yearbook it gives the address of the Westchester Theatre (300 seats) at 2319 Webster Avenue.

However in the 1927 edition of F.D.Y. the Westchester Theatre (300 seats) is located at 2319 Westchester Avenue. In the 1930 edition of Film Daily Yearbook, the Westchester Theatre is still located at 2319 Westchester Avenue, Bronx. Seating is listed as 275 and it is (Closed).

The theatre was probably never equipped for sound movies.

Yes, Lost, that’s the correct theatre. The building is still there, I recognize that arch thing. I’ve seen it from the elevated #6 train and I thought it had been a theatre at one time. It’s an odd design, the way that arch is, I thought that the building had an upper floor that had been demolished and they only retained the arch, but apparently I was wrong. It is presently being used for retail.

the building currently at 2319 Westchester Ave. looks nothing like the building in the picture above. what building might dave-bronx be referring to?

I believe the commenter from 2007 may be talking about the building at 2255 Westchester Ave. We are having a discussion about this building in a Bronx Facebook group.

Apparently there were relatives born around 1905 who recalled that the building was a nickelodeon. I can’t find any mention of it as a theater in the early 20th century.

Online real estate info shows that it was built in 1930,which can’t be correct. I’m wondering if the numbers were transposed and it was 1903.

there’s some debate as to what was the first purpose built movie theater in the Bronx. if the date of 1903 is correct than its this theater. if not than it would be the Nicoland designed by Thomas Lamb which opened in 1908.

Thanks! Still trying to figure it out, as a number of people recall the building as a theater. By 1940, the tax photo shows one or two storefronts at ground level, definitely not a theater.

I passed by Westchester Ave. the other day and was stroke by the striking similarity though with a modernized street level front of 2255 Westchester Ave. to the photo above. is it at all possible that 2255 Westchester Ave. is in fact the Westchester Theater and the address of 2319 is wrong? if not then whoever built the Westchester Theater built an almost identical building a few blocks away.

If you look closely at the photo if 2319 above, you’ll see it’s a one-story building. Google 2255 and you’ll see that it’s a taller building, the only similarity being that rounded section.

if 2255 Westchester Ave. which is a really old building was not
in fact the Westchester Theater than I find it fascinating that a building which is quite similar to the Westchester Theater was built at the same tine only a few blocks away.
