Revere Drive-In

I think I do remember the drive in being moved. Never attended it but I remember being driven by it on the highway. The newer location had its screen so it was right in front of you as you hit a curve. Wonder how many accidents it caused.

While investigating something about the drive-in, I came here, and thought I would point out a couple things from historicarials.com that are mentioned above.

There WAS a drive-in that straddled the line between Revere and East Boston, but I believe it was called the Suffolk Downs Drive-In, and was located across Bennington Street from the race track on what is now the Belle Isle Marsh Reservation. It was built after 1955 (maybe 1957), and it appears the screen still existed in 1971 but gone by 1978. No sign of it existed by 1995. This would have co-existed with the Revere Drive-In, so it would not have shared a name with it.

However, if you look at the aerials from 1955 of the Revere Drive-In, and then look at across Squire Rd., you’ll see the outline that appears as if it was a drive-in that has been abandoned. Could this have been the “previous” Revere Drive-In, that was abandoned in favor of the larger one across the street?

The site referenced is actually the second location of the Revere Drive-In. Originally located south of Beach St. where Super Stop & Shop is now located. I have actually tracked down the elusive second Revere Drive-in. After some research, I have discovered that the Suffolk Downs Drive-In Theatre was at 1375 Bennington Rd, and is exactly where I thought it once was – it is now Belle Isle Marsh Reservation. It appears to have been opened for a period between 1950-1970, and possibly has an East Boston address rather than a Revere address, which is news to me, although the Suffolk Downs T station is also listed as East Boston, so it’s possible – they both straddle the town lines, I guess. But hey at least I know my mother-in-law was right now!:–)

No Just discussing theatres with Scott.He thought the CAPRI THEATRE h ere was first run movies,not the Triple X theatre it was.And Paul Revere and the Raiders weren’t that bad.“HUNGRY” was a pretty good song.

Mr. Almanac,Was Paul Revere ever there?

Ok, time to see if anyone’s memories are jogged by this one. According to my wife’s mother, there used to be a second drive-in in Revere, in the Beachmont section; she lived within walking distance of it, and could even see movies on the screen from her house on Washburn Ave. According to her, it was in the area now occupied by Charles Fredericks Park, on the parcel of land bordered by Everard Street and Bennington Street, between the Blue Line stops of Suffolk Downs and Beachmont on the opposite side of the road. The current entrance to the (rather smallish) park does indeed look similar to a drive-in entrance. She says she thinks it was still open for business as late as the early to mid 60s, when she moved to Washington state to get married. Anyone else out there remember this one? If it did exist (and mom-in-law has a great memory about these things), it needs a page…once we can find out more about it, that is…:–)

Whenever I take Route 1 South past this location, I think of the time I saw 10 seconds of a drive-in movie as we drove by on the way to Boston.
