The Lehigh Theatre closed September 22, 1957 with “Bambi” and “The adventures of Robin Hood.”
When did the the Lehigh close? Shoeshoe14 says 1955. Richwy150 says he was 5 years old when it closed, but doesn’t say when he was 5. And PHILLYTOM says he went to the Lehigh Theatre — although he wasn’t even born until after 1955. Please — someone solve this mystery!
Yes, the Lehigh Theatre was a smaller theater than the Cambria Theatre — 480 vs. 850.
THIS PLACE COULDN’T HAVE CLOSED DOPWN IN 1955 AS THE PREVIOUS STATEMENT SAIDS AS I WENT HERE AND I WAS NOT EVEN BORN THEN!WHICH IS TO CLARIFY, IT MUST HAVE STOPPED SHOWING FILMS AROUND 1965. I RECALL GOING IN HERE ONCE OR TWICE AND IT WAS USUALLY STANDING ROOM ONLY SO MOST KIDS STARTED TO GO UP TO THE CAMBRIA THEATER. BOTH OF THEM USUALLY SHOWED OLD HERCULES OR MONSTER FILMS.BY STANDING ROOM, I GUESS THEY DID NOT HAVE THAT MANY SEATS, SO I RECALL STANDING IN THE SNACK AREA.I ALSO REMEMBER HAVING TO CLIMB UP AROUNT TWO BROAD STEPS TO GET TO THE CASHIER WINDOW.
Though it closed when I was 5 years old, I remember going there. It seemed to be a smaller operation than the Cambria Theater a few blocks away. I remember there was an old usher who sold candy from a table set up in the back of the theater.
Anyone remember the old Woolworth’s in the same block with wooden floors?
