AMC Landmark 8

The Trans-Lux Cinema 1 & 2 opened on April 9, 1976 in the Landmark Office Building, which later was attached to the Stamford Town Center Mall (next to Macy’s). Theater 1 sat around 400, theater 2 sat over 1,000. On November 14,, 1980 an adjacent former restaurant space was annexed to become Cinema 3, with about 120 seats.

It was closed on August 24, 1995 and was expanded to 9-screens, reopening on May 9, 1995 and a total seating capacity of 1,600.

Bow-Tie Cinemas assumed operation of this facility on November 17, 2006.

It was closed for several months pre-Covid-19 pandemic in 2019 to begin an extensive renovation, where all of the auditoriums were fitted with new screens and sound systems, draperies, carpets and luxury electric recliners. Theater 7 downstairs, which originally sat 99 patrons, was gutted out and some adjacent abandoned air handling space was reclaimed. Those spaces were combined for an upscale arcade, which will open in 2021. The theater reopened to the public as an eightplex on May 28, 2021 with a reduced seating capacity of 639.

AMC took over this location from Bow Tie Cinemas on 4/18/22 and from April 23, 2022 it was renamed AMC Landmark 8.

Obviously Joe knows his stuff, but what the City Directory lists in names is quite wrong, but since it’s historical record, here goes.

In 1978, listed as TransLux Cinemas 1 and 2, then TransLux Cinemas 3 in 1986 (then 1 and 2 in 1988-1993), and then in 1994/1995 changes to Crown Landmark Square.

This reopened with 9 screens on May 9th, 1996. Crown took over the Trans-Lux theatres in 1991.

Upgrades will reduce capacity of the auditoriums when new leather recliners are installed.

Please update, third theatre opened on November 14, 1980, theatre closed August 24, 1995 for renovation to nine screens which opened on May 9, 1995. Better quality grand opening ads added to the photo section Also remove from previous names Crown landmark 6, it went from 3 to 9, I verified with the Stamford Advocat that the theatre was closed from September 1995 to May 1996 as closed for renovations.
