Grand opening ad posted.
Grand opening as Penn-Lincoln Drive-In was on July 22, 1948 with “Something In The Wind”. Final night of first-run operation was on September 6, 1982 with “Midnight” and “Beyond The Fog”.
Grand reopening as Super 30 West Drive-In was on May 24, 1985 with “Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment” and “Visionquest”. This revival only lasted until September 22, 1985 with “Summer Rental” and “Volunteers”. It was announced in May 1986 that the drive-in would not reopen.
Approx. address for this drive-in was 7992 Steubenville Pike. Now Imperial Plaza.
This was the very first drive-in I remember visiting as a kid. It was the mid-to-late 70’s and I was about 6 or 7. Me and my family lived in nearby Burgettstown back then; we either went to this drive-in (The Penn-Lincoln at that time) 8 ½ miles away or the Twin Hi-Way another six miles east. Of course, I don’t remember what we saw at either drive-in except “Star Wars” at the Twin Hi-Way when they acquired it in 1978.
Hopefully, somebody bought the old Penn-Lincoln/Super 30 West screen and moved it to another operating drive-in; it was in too great of shape to be scrapped.
What an operation, was the most disorganized, organization I ever saw. This company single handedly destroyed the Pittsburgh, Pa. downtown movie theatre business. They let the theatre’s go to hell, and would use some lame excuse to close them. I was a projectionist at all these theatre’s. My main job was the Warner on 5th Ave. They said that the ceiling was falling down, the truth is an usher was up there exploring and missed stepped and knocked a piece of plaster on some lady;s head. They closed the Chatham, the Fulton, Fiesta, Warner and Bank all i a short time… They were like a disease, seek and destroy…
