Construction: Built between 1939 and 1940 by Ervine Turner and Curt Childers on Main Street in Jackson.Naming: Named the “Jaxon Theatre” following a 1940 community contest won by Raleigh Moore.Upgrades: Added modern features over the years, including air conditioning in 1950 and automated phone showtimes by 1957.Community Hub: Known fondly by locals for hosting events, live acts—such as the Stanley Brothers in 1962—and Saturday western double features

Curtis Childers and Ervine Turner opened the New Theatre namelessly and a moniker contest on August 3, 1940 with “Outpost of the Mounties” and “Blondie on a Budget.” That turned out to be the Jaxson as submitted by R.T. Davis Coal Company employee Raleigh Moore. He received a three-month free pass.
The Jaxson Theatre closed March 9, 1963 with “The Lawless Breed” supported by Chapter 7 of “Tex Granger: The Midnight Rider of the Plains” and a cartoon. The auditorium was gutted by a fire not long after showtimes. The building was repaired and retrofitted for the Jackson Department Store that opened on August 3, 1963.
