Likely closed on July 30, 1983 with “Psycho II”.
The actual opening date is October 27, 1938 with Robert Taylor in “The Crowd Roars” along with a few unnamed short subjects (unlisted on grand opening ad), and was a replacement of an earlier Gayety Theatre which opened in 1915.
Village grand opening ads posted.
Reopened as Village Cinema on March 23rd, 1966 per:
The Google Street view comes up as Elsmere Kentucky, but the address is correct because the nearby buildings match up to the photo I just posted. Not sure where the dividing line is between Erlanger and Elsmere.
This was just another theatre I filled in on as projectionists
An ad for the F & Y Building Service in the October 27, 1938, issue of the Boone County Recorder (PDF here) said that Erlanger’s new Gayety Theatre was one of eleven movie houses the company had designed and built since December, 1937.
Lots of childhood memories at this local theater. They showed everything from 1st run movies like Blade Runner (which opened here locally) to revivals of My Fair Lady – even foreign films from time to time (perhaps dubbed, but nevertheless…). Not special architecturally but like so many local theaters, special because you could take a nice walk to it and after the movie have a cheese coney at the local chili place.
It was also operated in the 1970’s and 80’s as The Village Cinema.
