The Algy Theater is located in the Algiers section of New Orleans on the west bank. It was a classic neighborhood theater with the classic 1940’s style and projection equipment. It was opened by United Theatres on October 23, 1940. By 1950 it was operated by Theaters Service Co. chain. Taken back by United Theatre they closed it on April 1, 1956.
This vintage theater did not have air-conditioning, which was an issue in the hot and humid climate of New Orleans.
I personally toured the closed theater, and most of the projection booth was left untouched. (The two projectors were not intact, but all the other equipment was still installed.)
This property is currently being used as a studio/shop for a glass blower. This is a must see for any tour of the Algiers theater district.

THEREâ€\S ONE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
The History of the Neighborhood Theaters in New Orleans
is being written by 89-year-old Rene Brunet, the dean of the motion picture industry in Louisiana, and New Orleans historian Jack Stewart. The 160-page,coffee table book will be released in November and is being published by Arthur Hardy Enterprises, Inc. Attention will be focused on 50 major neighborhood and downtown theaters, culled from a list of nearly 250 that have dotted the cityâ€\s landscape since the first “nickelodeon†opened in 1896 at 626 Canal Street. The book will be divided by neighborhoods and will open with a map and a narrative about each area. Each major theater will feature “then and now†photographs, historic information, and a short series of quotes from famous New Orleanians and from regular citizens who will share their recollections.

I grew up in Algiers Point in the mid 1950
s thru 1978 and had gone The Algy many times before it closed. The lack of A/C never bothered me. I lived in the neighborhood of only a few blocks away. The other movie theatres in Aklgiers I went to was the Abalon and the Fotos Follies right down the street from the Albalon.Opened by United Theaters October 23, 1940. Closed by United Theaters April 1, 1956.
