The Lyric opened in 1909 and was the first building in Elgin built solely for showing motion pictures.

The Lyric Theater was located at 64 S. Grove Avenue in downtown Elgin. The theater was built in 1909 and had a seating capacity of about 350. After doing some research, I have found that the Lyric has NOT been demolished but is still standing and seems to be vacant. The theater closed in 1913 probably due to the competition of larger theaters in the immediate area. Since its closing the old theater building has been remodled several times over the decades.

There is now an office on the first floor of this building – I believe they make maps; so the function for this property should be listed as ‘office space.’

This building was purchased in April 2011 and construction is underway to renovate it into a family pizzeria on the first floor and a private apartment for the owner of the pizzeria in the second.
