Center Theatre

The Center Theatre was still standing in downtown Gastonia but has been closed for years and is in very bad shape. The marquee hung over the entrance but peeking into the front doors the lobby and auditorium look like they’re probably too far gone to be saved.

It opened in 1927 as the Temple Theatre and operated during 1940’s by Paramount Pictures Inc. through their subsidiary H.F. Kincey. It operated into the 1950’s, but changed to the Center Theatre in 1960.

It was demolished in 2009.

According to Bowers' “Encyclopedia of Automatic Musical Instruments” page 551, the “Ideal” theatre was equipped with a Reproduco organ made by the Operators Piano Co.

Anyone have any current photos of this building? Ownership status, etc.?

The 1930-1931 Gastonia city directory lists the Ideal Theatre at 159-161 W. Main Avenue. It had previously been listed at 125 or 127 W. Main.
