steventonysmith, that’s not really a photo of what the theater will look like. AMC uses that photo on the theater page of many of their theaters on AMC’s website. Basically its a stock image used to give an idea of how the theater looks, but each theater is different.
I got an email talking about the name change and it stated renovations are going to start very soon it even included a picture of the proposed rennovations
AMC has dropped classic from the name. Renovations are finally in the works!
Nikki Paul, who for decades worked at the box office of several movie theaters in Sioux City, most recently this one, has died at the age of 100. While she stopped working at the box office several years ago, she continued as a Walmart greeter until last year.

This was taken over by Excellence theatres in 1988 giving Excellence the first-run monopoly in Siouxland until 2004.
Rayman29 unfortunately AMC put a hold on all renovations to the Carmike chain theaters they purchased until 2018 or early 2019. The merger caused them to get into a desperate financial situation. Carmike sucked as a chain like this theater my local theater here was opened in 1996 and Carmike did nothing to keep it up or renovate it.
This opened on March 28th, 1980. Grand opening ad in the photo section and below.

Despite what someone said above, almost nothing has changed at the theater since being converted to stadium seating in 2002, and besides stadium seating, almost nothing has changed since I started going to this theater in the late 90s. The seats are the same ones that were in the theaters before the stadium seating conversion. I assume improvements will finally be made in the next few months as a result of AMC buying Carmike.
The 1880s?! Lol
It is fairly nice today. However, I prefer Promenade! Last show I saw there was The Hobbit in 3D. It was awesome
Went to this theatre for several years until the Promenade opened up downtown. I have only seen a couple movies here since then, the last one was in November 2010. The theatre was in terrible shape. Carmike needs to relies they aren’t the only theatre in SC anymore and update it.
Dan E.Welcome to cinema treasures hope to read alot more from you on old theatres.
I believe the Southern Hills Cinema opened up on September,1980 as a four screen theatre. (The Southern hills mall opened up in 1980).
