The Essanee Theater opened on November 23, 1937. It was designed by Owen Southwell. The Essanee Theater closed as a movie theater on November 28, 1985 with John Stockwell in “City Limits”. This former movie theater is now used as a performing arts center. It is home to IPAL (Iberia Performing Arts League).

The Essanee Theater opened its doors on November 23, 1937. What’s very unique is that MANY stars, including Eddie Cantor, Bing Crosby, Jeanette MacDonald, Shirley Temple, and the Ritz Brothers, sent special messages to operators Julis Scharff and Elias Elias on opening night.
Gulf State Theatres last operated the Essanee as a movie theater, before closing on November 28, 1985 with “City Limits”.
