United Artists opened Movies 6 on June 15, 1979 and ran the moderately successful theatre until July 25, 2000. The building sat vacant, until Interstate Theatres (now Starplex Cinemas) reopened the theatre as a discount house in 2004. The pricing format change proved successful and Movies 6 experienced heavy traffic, as Bakersfield’s only sub-run venue.
The theatre is a bare bones 1970’s style multiplex, with auditoriums directly off of a small lobby; two largest auditoriums seating 400, with remaining four seating 120-180. The décor is basic white, with vaulted ceilings and track lighting. Due to space limitations, projection booth access is gained via an entry door located in the back of an auditorium. This compact design also results in an awkward concession stand that is partially obstructed by a series of columns. Taken over by AMC December 16, 2015, it became a first-run theatre from April 1, 2019.
