The Essex Theatre was opened by Wometco Theatres on April 5, 1949 with Humphrey Bogart in “Knock on Any Door”. It was renamed Atlantic Theatre from September 15, 1978 to 1980. It was twinned on December 4, 1981 and reverted back to its Essex Theatre name. In 1983 it was tripled. It became a bargain cinema, running older movies for a buck. The Essex Theatre closed in 1985. It became a church, but was demolished in 2020.

This was a Wometco house in the sixties and seventies.
My mother and I laughed ourselves silly during a screening of “When Comedy Was King” -a look back at the really funniest films produced.
The Essex closed in 1977 and was already operating by 1949.
From 1978-1980 the Essex became the Atlantic. It became the Essex once again when it was twinned in 1981. It was tripled in 1983.
