Thank you John for your update. I just found the Facebook page: Indianatheater. Finally a big historic positive for Terre Haute. Now I have an added reason to come back to visit the Wabash Valley.
The theater has been sold to a new owner, Rob Lundstrom. It is now the Indiana Event Center.
It is undergoing a 4 phase restoration and conversion to make it usable for much, much more than just movies. So far, the 1st phase of restoration is complete and the second phase is underway.
All of the damaged plaster has been repaired. The upper half of the seats on the main floor seating area have been removed and the floor has been leveled for table seating, dancing, etc. Moveable bars may be moved into place for serving drinks.
The orchestra pit has been covered and leveled, all except for an area stage right where the orchestra pit has been preserved and a lift has been installed upon which the restored theater organ console will sit.
The theater is useable and available for rent for your event even as the restoration is progressing.
Mr. Lundstrom believes that there is still a LOT of magic in this theater, and he is right! You can fell it when you look at the place.
Soon, it will be restored and many events, live performances, dinners, and ceremonies will occur there. It will soon be the place to be for special movies and live entertainment, not to mention that special event that could be yours.
According to information presented to CIC-ATOS, this summer, the building has been sold. I was in the theater a couple of years ago as CIC-ATOS was planning to re-instal a theater pipe organ in it. The entry and lobby were beautiful, and the theater was not in bad condition. Needed some TLC. Updated sound system sounded great. New owner is interested in having the organ installed and improving the venue.
I hope the Indiana Theater is bought & is restore. The last few times I have driven by the theater, the outside wasn’t in good shape. Which makes me wonder how bad shape is the inside of the building. I hope the Indiana Theater can once again be the great Theater that she was when I went there many times over the years as a child. The Indiana Theater is too great not to be restore & used as an entertainment center.

I’m not sure the status of being open is correct for this theater. Very few events open to the public take place at this theater any more. Mostly private events, if there is any activity taking place at this theater. This theater is on life support. Untill the City Of Terre Haute or some group takes it over. I’m surprise the wrecking ball hasn’t taken ownership of this theater. Sad, as this was an outstanding theater at one time.
The Indiana Theater has been for sale for a long time. Looks like the asking price has been reduce. I have driven by this theater several times when going to see my stock broker. The outside of the theater is not in good shape. I wouldn’t be surprise inside the theater isn’t in good shape either. When I was a child, this was a very busy & successful theater. Unless used for private events, this theater isn’t used much anymore. It take a large amount of money to put this theater back in the shape that is was at one time. There’s two marquees missing that were at one time at this theater. Only one in the middle remains of the 3 orginal marquees.

It does tend to change (the website), but at least it’s still there. I’ve not been back to Indiana in decades, but I may make a trip to Terre Haute when I visit my mother (now in Bowling Green, KY) early next year. I’ll be sure take as many photos as I can, inside and out.
It’s funny how the ‘Indiana’ sign currently in place doesn’t match the architecture, yet still looks totally cool. I’d guess it to be from the late 1950’s…anyone actually know?

Tim White, the Indiana Theater website stills works. I saw posted on the site yesterday, there will be a free family film festival starting in June. The Indiana Theater seems to be on life support by barely being open. As there is very little activity taking place at this theater now, unless it’s a private function. I don’t know how the owners of this theater can afford to pay the expenses when the theater has very little activity taking place. Which may explain why the theater doesn’t look grand on the outside like it did at one time.
No news, no ‘save the Indiana Theater’ Facebook page, no nuthin'. I’m an ex-Hoosier, so I know the apathy regarding historic buildings in Indiana all-to-well. It’s just far to easy to knock them down and build something new, or worse…a parking lot. I also know this theater would never get the help that the beautifully restored theaters in downtown Los Angeles have received over the past few years. Just throwing this out there, but I’d at least cough up hosting fees for a year to get the website back online. ( ). -Tim Berkeley, CA
Good question above. The website is gone w/o a trace and the listed phone number is no longer in service. :( I had hoped to visit this place someday with my dear mother.
Is this theater still open ? On it’s website it only mentions a comedy show that took place on March 27, 2010. Looking at the 2009 picture that Chuck posted above, the marquee needs a paint job & T. L. C. It’s sad this great theater isn’t been taking care of. There were three marquees at one time. What happpen to the other two marquees ?
