Grand opening was on October 23, 1971 with the film “Big Jake” starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara.

My recollection of the sequence of events is that it shifted from first-run to late-run bargain house after Showcase Cinemas North opened and, with incomparably greater corporate clout and state-of-the-art amenities, took control of first-run product.

I believe Ed is mistaken that Cinema Wexford was a late-run bargain house. When I was growing up in the 1970s/early 80s, they had first-runs for the North Hills area — “Heaven Can Wait”, “10”, “Grease”, and “Norma Rae” to name a few. They were also the only theater in Pittsburgh to show “My Brilliant Career”, the late 70s Australian film that introduced Judy Davis. (Also, they often had kiddie matinees of “Willy Wonka…” when I was in elementary school.)

The theater opened as the Jerry Lewis Cinema. As Cinema Wexford it functioned as a late-run bargain house.

“Field of Dreams” was the last title to play here on July 16, 1989.
