talking with faye mcnair and she managed for 25 years,said one night TV STAR and singer ANDY WILLIAMS attended a movie….word got out and the lobby was full of fans when he came out after that show..
hoping to get pictures from an ex manager on here..
just added this theatre on Facebook, even though I never worked there a lot of locals were wanting it added, still wish I had more pictures of the theatre itself.
Fort Gordon had new Theatre built .now it is used for Plays..
I lived a few blocks from the theater in 1966. The house for whatever reason is now gone, it’s an empty lot and now I see the theater has been gone for many years as well. I saw “With Six You Get Eggroll” and a few other movies there. My dad was stationed at Fort Gordon so we watched some movies at the fort, but the only other theater we went to was Daniel Village Rocking Chair Theater. Rocking Chair certainly gave it some charm.

I loved this theater. It was so comfortable. I remember seeing Dances with Wolves here and they just cut off the movie in the middle. Time to buy more concessions!

The Northgate Theatre in Durham, NC (which opened in X-Mas of 62) would play a lot of Disney movies as well,and basically was the market for both Disney and MGM. It also played “Mary Poppins” as a general release on April 13,1965.

I have a seat from the Daniel Village theater sitting in my bedroom right now. My Mom gave it to me. I lived right back behind the theater on Cardinal Drive, I saw most of my childhood movies there. I remember when the theater closed down and my parents went in the theater and took a few items before it closed down. I will never get rid of that movie chair and the little piece of carpet that came with it.
I worked here from 1972-1974…way below minimum wage, I think it worked out to .50/hr. If I worked 20 hrs, the pay envelope had $15.90 and 40 hours (summer), it had $27.90 in it. New owners/management put up curtains in 1974 and told concessionaires not to be watching the movies (for FREE!!!??!!) and put up curtains so we couldn’t stand in the doorway to stand. White Lightning played there for the longest time in 1973; I had the entire film memorized line-by-line by the time it finished its run.
riausche,good info on the doors, i always thought Daniel Village needed them, while at National Hills the concession was for enough away.But on busy nights we would rope off the lobby and fill it up,which would have ruined anyone watching the movie from the noise.
One last comment. Alot of new theaters back then did not have doors between the lobby and the viewing room. Our Villag Shoregae and Parmatown did not have doors. The Colony had them put on when they remodeled in 64. They did it because they were going to start showing reserve seat movies
Whe in was in Aurusta (Aug-Nov 65) the National was not buid yet. The Daniel was “THE SOUND OF MUSIC"n has a reserve seat attraction. I donot know when it end the run. I knew Augusta had good bus service, but being in the army we did not want to take a chance of getting lost. One time I head it also played ‘MY FAIR LADY” for a short run.
I have read it on several of our theatres.I thought we had better bus service.It played at NATIONAL HILLS THEATRE here in 70mm.Daniel Village had 35mm,but a nice size screen,until they twinned it.
When I was down in Augusta in the summer of 1965 this theater played “Sound of Music” most of the summer. I was station at Fort Gordon. A friend wanted to go there but we did not want to take a chance of getting there and not making it back to the base.
You could hear the Concessionstand area too.Think the seating is wrong.No way it ever held over 1000 people.
One other thing I remember vividly about this theater was that darn Space Invaders video game in the lobby. You could hear it in the auditoriums, I swear that game was there till the place closed !!!!
Spent a lot of time at this one also. My mom worked in one of the stores at Daniel Village, and shed take me to work with her in the summer and Id go down and see a movie. Ya’ll are right about them playing a lot of Disney films……….Went here a bunch in the late 80s when it became a dollar movie……..Still frequented this place well into 1991……………One of the last movies I can recall seeing here was Thelma and Louise…..

you are right Compared to National Hills Theatre it wasn’t as Classy,But Daniel Village did have a nice size screen until Georgia Theatres decided it needed twinning.
I went to the Daniel Village Theater a few times when I would visit relatives in Augusta in the 1960s-70s. It was completely forgettable in every way, totally indistinguishable from a zillion other “shopping center” movie houses (“screening rooms” would be a much better name for these shoeboxes). It’s painful to think that such as these were a prime cause of the demise of our treasured downtown theaters like the Modjeska and the Miller, and countless other movie palaces across the nation. I’m absolutely delighted to learn that it’s gone. And I really deplore the loss of the Augusta Airport (Daniel Field) terminal building/control tower, which stood nearby on the other side of Wrightsboro Rd. Here was an Art Moderne gem to rank with the Miller, and it was demolished, for no good reason that I ever heard. “What fools we mortals be.”
