We are currently investigating the possibility of the Lido Theatre being recognized as the longest running and oldest operating Atmospheric theatre in the world.

We are fairly certain that it is the oldest in Canada, the longest running in North America. Likewise, we are fairly certain that it is the only Atmospheric theatre to survive without public funds of any kind and all along the way being owned by the same family.

Guinness World Records recognizes the Duke of York in Brighton, UK. as the oldest purpose built cinema in the world. The Duke was built in 1910. Using that as a basis, we are attempting to establish whether or not the Lido Theatre is the oldest operating atmospheric and longest running atmospheric. The Duke of York has not always remained, nor is it now, an atmospheric cinema.

Any further information or help from the Cinema Treasures community would be greatly appreciated.

I can be emailed at

Grandcameo, please e-mail me at I am interested in learning more about your non-profit & website which lists theaters for sale. Please read the following on the Ridgewood Theatre, which I am hoping to preserve, adaptively reuse, & help reopen: http://cinematreasures.org/news/19023_0_1_0_C/
