This was to be built by Cinemark (i think Tinseltown Toronto), but the land was sold to Cineplex Odoen.
unbuilt Tinseltown Toronto cinema 18 Dec 1998, Fri The Toronto Star (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) Newspapers.com
This theatre opened on November 16, 2001, with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Shallow Hal, Heist, Life as a House, The One, Monsters, Inc., Domestic Disturbance, K-Pax, Century Hotel, and AmeliĆ©.
Since Cineplex Odeon disappeared as an independent entity by 1998, this theatre was part of Loews Cineplex when it opened in 2001. Cineplex Galaxy acquired this theatre in 2003.
I’ve noticed that it’s only $24.99 on weekends. During the week it’s $19.99 and on Tuesdays $14.99 I guess they’ve come a long way since the Varsity ones opened back in 1999. Will have to try them out someday.
Saw Jersey Boys in the new VIP over the weekend. Definitely an indulgence, and the $24.99 admission keeps the knuckle-dragging folk who need to talk during the movie at a minimum! It should be noted that these VIP theaters are not “screening rooms” but full-sized theaters with big, cushy reclining seats. These VIP’s make the VIP screening rooms at the Varsity look like utility closets.

Noticed on the Cineplex web site today that the VIP price is now listed at $19.99 instead of the $24.99 that was listed when it was opened.
And it’s now been re-branded as Cineplex Cinemas Queensway & VIP
To add hdtv267: Queensway is spliced into 15 screens/auditoriums. The last 3 auditoriums were lost into the VIP Cinemas with the newer two VIP theatres added. Total screens is 20 (15 regular + 5 VIP).
This was to be built by Cinemark in the late 1990’s but they pulled out.
I am defintely impressed with the AVX theatre in 18, great digital presentation and the 7.1 Dolby surround mix is one of the best sound systems I have found in the city for years outside of the Scotiabank IMAX and Cinesphere. The Digital 3d films especially in theatre 10 I normally go elsewhere or wait until a week or two into the run since intially it seems they keep getting the wrong digital print which doesnt properly fell the screen not just above and below but also on either side. Go AVX or go home methinks with this one.
Saw Inception digitally projected here in Theater 9 tonight in D-Box Motion Code – very impressed with the technology which is more fun and immersive than 3-D. Theater 18 is their new digital large screen answer to IMAX – Ultra AVX, which recently opened with Twilight: Eclipse.
The theater was packed, even on a Sunday night with shows sell out – extremely popular and it has the aforementioned Pizza Pizza and Out Takes, as well as Alan Smittee’s bar, Yogen Fruz and Tim Hortons.
My only problem with Theater 9 is that it wasn’t masked correctly (they had it open for Flat when the film was in scope). Otherwise no complaints – we had a fun time.
