Odeon Theatre

Built and operated by the British owned Rank Organisation. The Odeon Theatre was opened on 8th June 1953, and was fully equipped for CinemaScope. The theatre was built on stilts, which allowed for a spacious car park beneath the building as well as additional parking at the rear. It was fully air-conditioned, and the cinema had a cry room for parents with babies. At the rear of the fully equipped stage, there were eight dressing rooms, all with showers.

The Odeon closed in 1984 with Lucinda Dickey in “Breakdance”. Since then, the cinema has been demolished and a new commercial building named Odeon Tower was erected on the site.

“The now-demolished Odeon Theatre which used to stand along North Bridge Road was known to be a meeting point for gay men.”
