The Starlite Drive-In was opened on July 30, 1953 with Betty Hutton in “Annie Get Your Gun”. It was operated by the Soo Amusement Co. I never went to this this drive-in.
I moved to the Soo in 1991 and it had already closed down. I was driving around one day on the outskirts of town and found the ruins of the place. The screen had collapsed and the place was overgrown with weeds but the marquee still stood out front and the projection house/concession stand was intact and accessible. Although it had obviously been vandalized, most of the equipment was still inside and the place felt like it was frozen in time to the date of it’s last screening which I recall from one of the ledger books had been about three or four years earlier.
I remember feeling a sense of sadness that a place that had entertained countless people for so long was now forgotten and rotting away.

I used to work here in the 70’s. Screen blew over in a huge windstorm and it was not economical to rebuild, so the place just closed. The map above and street view are totally wrong. Correct location is Mackinac Trail and 6 Mile Rd about six miles south of Sault Ste. Marie, MI.
