J Street Cinema Monthly Program

One of two independent theaters in Sacramento in the 1970’s/early-1980’s (along with the Showcase Theatre) that showed independent, foreign, and art films. The J Street Theatre opened in the late-1960’s, initially screening Mexican films. On September 6, 1980 it was renamed Old J Street Cinema. It was closed in 1983.

Fond memories of samurai movies shown in the late 70’s. If you needed a Toshiro Mifune fix, this was the place to go.

As I recall this little theater opened in the late 1960s and initially played Mexican films, sort of a replacement for the recently closed Rio Theater (519 J Street). That policy didn’t work so they quckly switched to an art house policy. Landmark later operated it successfully for several years with a calendar rep policy.

Does anyone recall the Guild Theater? I’m wondering if the J Street, or the Encore were names that prior to what they became.

Does anyone remember the attorney next door to the J street theater? He had a vintage barber chair in the front window.

Yes, I remember the Guild Theater. Foreign films, and coffee instead of popcorn. I saw Ingmar Bergman films, Alec Guiness, Jacques Tatie, and Terry Thomas School for Scoundrels. They gave me a graduation certificate when I came out of School for Scoundres. Made living in Sacramento bearable when I was in high school, so 1964-5. Loved that place
