Bijou Theatre

The Wells Bijou Theatre opened on October 22, 1906. Historic photographs show a large, handsome, brick building of five floors, with stone or plaster detailing in a restrained Classical style. The theatre had two balconies and a large fly tower. The Bijou Theatre was severely damaged by a fire on December 19th, 1943, and the building was demolished in 1949.

It is probally best that you copy and paste the web address (http://www.lib.chattanooga.gov/localHist/photodatabase.html)
since the site doesn’t respond well to urls. Once there, do a search for Bijou and it will direct you onto the photo site.

The Bijou Theatre was one of four theatres operated by Paramount Theatres, subsidiaries.

All the photo links above are dead. This might be the 1906 photo of the Bijou, and this one dates from 1934.

The February 26, 1906, issue of The Atlanta Constitution had an article about the Bijou Theatre planned for that city, and noted that its architect, Fuller Claflin, was drawing plans for several other projects for the Bijou Theatre Company, including this house in Chattanooga.
