The Avoca Beach Picture Theatre began its life in the front garden of the homes of Norman & Mervyn Hunter in 1948. Soon after they built the existing Avoca Beach Picture Theatre just down the road which opened in December 1951. The theatre continues to be a family owned and run business - four generations of the Hunter family since the theatre began. More than 65 years of happy memories. It is a charming single-screen cinema located about an hour and a half north of Sydney, Australia in the small village of Avoca Beach. It sits in a garden setting just 60 yards from a fantastic surf beach. The theatre, with originally 500 seats (today 300 seats), runs full time throughout the year.
The building is free standing, with a funky foyer full of memobilia. French doors open onto a terrace and a view through to the sea, past the towering Norfolk pine. This is the prettiest cinema in Australia and one of a dying breed of single screens.
The Avoca Beach Picture Theatre has been honoured with Best Independent Regional Cinema in all of Australia in 2008, and then again in 2010, 2011 and 2012. 2012 also saw two Excellence in Tourism Awards and then in 2014, BBC named Avoca Beach Picture Theatre in the Top 20 Cinemas of the world and the New York Men’s Journal named it in the Top 10 in the world for programming!
