This single screen, 746-seat theatre opened on August 12, 1970. On December 7. 1979 it was divided down the centre to provide two screens.

The auditoriums are bathed in red, orange and purple, while the lobby is bare plain white with many windows.

As of 2005, this was the smallest theatre in the Famous Players chain. It was closed on August 5, 2010. It reopened at the end of March 2024 screening East Indian movies.

“Famous Players Theatres' Garden City Cinema located in the Garden City Shopping Centre, McPhillips at Leila opens on August 12, 1970 in Winnipeg. First manager is Dennis Singbiel. Theatre is said to be one of the most technically advanced in Canada and has a seating capacity of 746. Opening feature is “Suppose They Gave a War and Nobody Came”. Twined on December 7, 1979, with “Star Trek – The Motion Picture” in Cinema 1 and “The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie” in Cinema 2. Ownership change to Cineplex Entertainment on September 30, 2005. Closed on August 5, 2010 with “Inception” in Cinema 1 and “Mel Kara De Rabba” in Cinema 2.”

Ontario’s Albion Cinemas, which appears to be a single cinema showing ‘Indian “Bollywood” features’ in Toronto, is re-opening the Garden City Cinema with “bleacher” seating (could mean stadium, could mean stepped for recliners). A sign at the mall says they’re now hiring and opening this month.

Permit from the city issued September 16, 2022:

“Interior Alteration. Albion Cinemas o/a Garden City Cinemas-Occupancy for a new tenant, in an existing single storey, multi-tenant building. Interior alterations to include: demolition of walls, stairs, construction of walls, stairs, installation of doors, to create a UTR, box office, garbage disposal enclosures, on the main floor & a manager’s office on the mezzanine floor. It also includes: new bleacher seating, access ramps, millwork & new floor finishes. Mechanical and Electrical work being done.”

September 28, 2023:

“Plumb Building Alteration. Related Building Permit: 22-136255 RE. Garden City Cinema. Location of work within bldg: Unit 101. Replace plumbing fixtures in existing bathrooms. Adding one new UTR washroom. Adding one new kitchen sink.”

December 13, 2023:

“Wire Bldg Alteration. Related Building Permit: 22-136255 RE. Wire and install electrical lighting and devices”
