That was my Snow Ball Stand !!!
This Theater has been restored on the exterior to nearly the original look. Not quite but close. I am a local photographer and have before Katrina, after and now photos posted on my site. I am going to post some interior shots as well. I can post them here if anyone would like. For now www.wilkersonphotography.com
I just searched Google Earth for the A & G Theatre. It seems that as of January, 2010, the theatre is not only standing but appears to have been repaired. The Google Earth image shows the building in better shape than before the storm.
The A&G Theatre was featured in a scene of the movie “This Property Is Condemned” with Natlie Wood and Robert Redford in 1966.
The A&G Theatre (Ames & Gaspard)was built in 1927 at a cost of $60,000. The building was fire proof and was “the last word in motion picture theatre building” according to the local paper.
The architect for this theater was William T. Nolan of New Orleans. The original drawings are located in his collection at Tulane University’s Southeastern Architectural Archive.
The former A&G was still standing as of Sat 20 October but it’s in really bad shape. The adjacent building – seen in Lost Memory’s photo from 11 Aug 07 – was even more devastated.
Surprisingly, the building did survive Hurricane Katrina. All the buildings around it were destroyed. I often wanted to see inside it. Now its easy since all the doors were blown off. I am sure it will have to be demolished as unsafe now. We also lost the long closed Bay Star Theatre. Jim Dalrymple, Waveland/Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.
